Review: Ribs Etc. – Breaking Up Is Hard To Do….

First, let me put out this disclaimer – though it is a simple dish, and one that isn’t terribly difficult to make, the BBQ chicken here is about as good as you can find. And their wings are consistently great (especially if you ask for them “on the grill”…it really adds a nice char and great flavor).

Now that I have the niceties out of the way….

Ribs, etc. has been my go-to Buckhead BBQ spot for a few years now, but it seems that they have fallen under new management and I think it may be time to re-evaluate our relationship. It is time for a BBQ DTR.

Looking back, I think there has been a consistent backslide in the quality of the food and the service, but my sense of loyalty blinded me to it. But the take out I got the other night has shattered my rose colored glasses.

Here are the reasons I have been pushed over the edge.

1 – They no longer have the Mustard-based Caroline BBQ sauce. They have been “planning on adding it back to the menu” for months now. HUGE mistake…it was their best sauce by far. Also, the last time I ate there I asked our server if they had gotten the mustard sauce back yet. Her reply? “Ummmm….we have this?” and hands me a bottle of French’s yellow mustard. REALLY?!?! You work in a BBQ restaurant and you don’t know the difference between mustard based BBQ sauce and YELLOW MUSTARD?!?!?!

2- I ordered a pulled pork plate (supposedly one of the top 5 in Atlanta, per their website) and not only did it arrive without any BBQ sauce, which I discovered AFTER I got home, it was so dry that it was like eating pork-flavored saw dust.

3- Their fries used to be amazing…crisp, well seasoned, and with just enough skin on there to keep that potent potato flavor. They have since gradually become soggy and uninspiring.

4- They also forgot my fried pickles, for the 3rd time in a row. You can mess with my job, money, or family, but don’t F#$@ with my fried pickles.

I’m sorry Ribs, etc….I wish I could say that it is me and not you, but that would be a lie. And we have been together so long, you deserve more than that. I think it is time that we go our separate ways….

Are there other BBQ spots you favor these days?

I’m actually on the hunt for a new favorite BBQ place. Fox Bros. is great, but can be inconsistent. Fat Matt’s is also pretty damn good. Community Q is on my to-do list. I’ve eaten Williamson Bros. since I was a kid but I’m a slave to convenience much of the time, so I don’t make it out that way from Buckhead very often…
